Leeds Shotokan Karate Club - Awards Night

15 December 2018

The final event of 2018 was one of celebration as members of Leeds Shotokan and their families gathered to celebrate another fantastic year, and to give out awards for some exceptional achievements throughout the year. It is also a chance for all to get together socially and it was brilliant to see members new and old enjoying a good time together. We must say a massive thank you to everyone who helped with the food!

2018 has been a challenging year for all at Leeds Shotokan Karate Club, but as ever we have continued to thrive in the dojo, and in competition. KUGB Dan Grading

November 18th 2018

Two of Leeds Shotokans members had a fantastic day at the KUGB Dan grading in Sunderland.

Alinka Greasley and Victoria Howard were both awarded 1st Dan by the KUGB chief instructor Sensei Andy Sherry 9th Dan.

Both Alinka and Victoria have had to work incredibly hard to achieve this goal. Both have had to fight against adversity in some form and both are shining examples of what it means to be a student at Leeds Shotokan.

We are incredibly proud of them.

KUGB Northern Region Championships

October 20th 2018

Leeds Shotokan Karate Club enjoyed another golden weekend at the KUGB Northern Region Championships. The Northern Region is home to some of the KUGB's most talented Karateka many of whom were showing off their skills in Sunderland.

For those selected to represent the KUGB at the upcoming European Championships this marked a last chance for competitive action before jetting off to Nis, Serbia.

Leeds Shotokan took home many medals on the day but few would be able to argue that the result in the Senior Mens Team Kumite was the highlight of the day. The Leeds mens team, Ethan Armstrong, Sensei Ryan Tucker, and James Humphries managed to take the gold medal in close match with reigning National Champions, Halewood.

Ethan had fought brilliantly all day on his way to yet another Gold in the Senior Mens Kumite, and was deservedly awarded the trophy for best overall competitor.

Jade-Stapleton Smith and Luciano Zanuni had a terrific battle in the final of the under 18's category. Jade managed to come out on top on this occasion. Nathan Brady put in one of his most impressive performances to date to seal the Leeds 1-2-3. This result meant that a Leeds Shotokan student has won the u18 category in every domestic event this year! Even more impressive is that the titles have been shared amongst Luciano, Jade and Nathan - truly fantastic strength in depth.

Miranda Moualeu showed why she has been selected to represent KUGB Englad for the first time with a hugely impressive performance to take the Girls Kumite title. Once again Libby Vernon pushed Miranda all the way. Both girls have had exceptional years, we are very proud of them.

John Pinder performed excellently to take both the Kyu Grade Kumite title and the Veterans Kumite title, as his son Billy earned another bronze medal for his collection.

Alinka Greasley and James Humphries both fought superbly and managed to pick up a bronze medal in their respective categories.

There were other fantastic performances by Kishan Sharma (Boys Kumite), Josh Temple (Kumite and Kata) and Elsie Pinder (Ippon Kumite) who showed fantastic spirit, technique and attitude. They are all ones to watch!

European Shotokan Karate Association Championships - Niš, Serbia

23-25 November 2018

At the end of November a number of Leeds Shotokan Members swapped their Leeds tracksuit for an England one as they jetted off Niš, Serbia for the European Shotokan Karate Association Championships.

Sensei Ryan Tucker, Caroline McGrath, Ethan Armstrong, Jade Stapleton-Smith and Luciano Zanuni were joined by Miranda Moualeu who was making her KUGB England debut at this level. A fantastic achievement by Miranda, one that we hope will be continued for many years to come. It is absolutely fantastic to see so many of Leeds Shotokan's talented karateka contributing to the national team.

With the training over, the competition began with the Cadet events, with Jade and Luciano hoping to carry their extraordinary success from the youth category into this years championships. In the individual events Jade fought brilliantly on his way to a Bronze medal. This capped an amazing year for Jade in which he claimed the KUGB National Championship.

Jade and Luciano, along with Niall Gilligan from Solihull Karate Academy and Matthew Gibson from Sunderland Sendai, then fought in the Cadet Male Team Kumite event. After coming through an incredibly tough semi final against the Czech Republic the boys were matched up against Portugal in the final. An incredibly tense match saw England needing a win from Luciano in the final fight in order to draw the match and force an extra fight. Luciano put in his best performance of the whole championships to give England a chance with an extra fight. Luciano was selected by Sensei Sherry to be compete in the fight off. Luciano again fought brilliantly well but unfortunately the better rested Portuguese fighter managed to come away with the victory.

Despite the obvious disappointment the young England team showed great character and trust in each other and should be very proud of their accomplishment.

The following day saw Miranda Moualeu and James Humphries compete. Miranda fought very well against a tough Russian opponent and gained invaluable experience which will really push her on in the coming years. James Humphries has endured a frustrating year with injuries and was noticable stuggling as he took to the tatami. However James scored some wonderful points eventually losing to the Russian bronze medallist.

The final day saw the seniors in action with Sensei Ryan, Caroline and Ethan all competing. New Leeds signing Caroline looked sharp and scored some excellent points however fell short of a medal this time. Caroline also fought in the senior ladies team who were looking to defend the title they won in 2017. Unfortunately it wasnt to be as the ladies were incredible unlucky to lose a close match with Lithuania due to disqualification.

Ryan and Ethan once again fought alongside each other in the Senior Male Team Kumite event. KUGB England were the reigning World and European Champions heading into the event and had to dig incredibly deep to get past a much improved Belgian team in the Semi Final. The final was a much less tense affair with England coming away with a decisive 4-1 victory against a very strong Italian side. The win gave England their third European Title in a row!

The day, and the championships, belonged to Ethan Armstrong. In what is undoubtedly one of the most special days in Leeds Shotokan's long history, Ethan was crowned the Senior Mens Individual Kumite Champion. In his first year as a senior, having suffered the disappointment of disqualification in the final last year, Ethan fought through many tough and skilled opponents. The final was an all England affair as Ethan took on current World Champion and team mate Joe Rawcliffe. Ethan and Joe have battled many times this year, with both of them coming out on top. On this occasion Ethan walked away with the European Title.

Congratulations to all who competed especially those from KUGB England who became European Champions, Rebecca Rawcliffe of Halewood and Callum Wilson of St Johns.

KUGB Shotokan Cup - Chesterfield

September 22nd 2018

On Saturday 22nd September Leeds Shotokan took a squad of Brown and Black belts to the KUGB Shotokan Cup Competition at Queens Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield.

Open only to Black and Brown belts the Shotokan Cup is the KUGB National Individual Championship, and as such is always of an incredibly high standard. As well as competing for British titles and national medals the competition offered a final chance to impress Sensei Andy Sherry 9th Dan and Sensei Frank Brennan 8th Dan who will shortly be selecting the KUGB England team for the upcoming European Shotokan Karate Association Championships in Nis, Serbia.

The Leeds squad, led by Sensei Ryan Tucker 4th Dan, was a mix of very experienced competitors looking to build on an already impressive year, and some looking to build their competition experience and test themselves against the very best in the KUGB.

Sensei Ryan, and Ethan Armstrong both managed to bring home a medal in the Senior Men’s Kumite (fighting) event, whilst Tushan Joseph, Libby Vernon and Joshua Temple managed the same feat in the junior and children’s Kumite events.

In a repeat of the National Championship final, Miranda Moualeu out pointed Leeds Shotokan team mate Libby Vernon to take the Shotokan Cup title. Both girls have had an exceptional year so far and it is becoming the norm to see them battling against each other in competition finals, which is fantastic to see from a Leeds point of view.

The performance of the day, however, belonged to Luciano Zanuni who bounced back from recent disappointments with a clinical and decisive performance to win gold in the Male Junior Kumite 16-17 event. The category has belonged to Leeds Shotokan in 2018 so far. Luciano, Jade Stapleton-Smith and Nathan Brady have all claimed gold medals in a year which has seen a Leeds fighter on top of the podium in every competition we have entered this year. The future looks bright for LSKC!

As well as the Karate, Kate Brady of Leeds Shotokan was in attendance encouraging people the sign up to the Organ Donor Registry and raising money for the KUGB Charity appeal – the Transplant society. You can register your details to become an organ donor by following the link below!

Advanced Kata and Kumite Course - Photos

August 26th 2018

Sensei Ryan was recently invited to be the guest instructor at the Advanced Kata and Kumite Karate weekend. The course, hosted each year by Sunderland Sendai Karate Club, welcomes students from all around the country to train under Sensei John Bruce 5th Dan, Sensei Holly Stirling 5th Dan, and a visiting instructor. Across the weekend students really have to push themselves, amassing a whopping 9 hours of high quality training with excellent instructors.

Sensei Ryan arrived Sunday morning and despite some sore legs was very impressed with every students spirit, attitude and desire to improve. He was also delighted to see some fellow international competitors from Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. We would highly recommend this course to any Leeds Shotokan Students who are looking to take their karate to the next level, get your name on the waiting list for 2019 to avoid missing out!

Randy Williams Memorial Competition - LSKC 2018

September 9th 2018

Each year Leeds Shotokan and York Elite hold an inter club competition in memory of our late, great instructor Sensei Randy Williams. The competition is a chance for those who do not normally compete to experience what it is like to represent their club, but in a friendly environment. This year we also welcomed Sowerby Bridge SKC to the competition.

After last year’s hugely successful event at York, it was the turn of Leeds Shotokan to host in the Roundhegians Dojo. 2018’s competition saw a record number of entries into the event, which aims to give every student the opportunity to showcase what they have been learning, and put their training into practice. The attendance of national squad members also allows the younger students to get a look at how far they can go with the right attitude, and training regularly.

The continued success of the Randy Williams Memorial Competition would not be possible without the help and support of the members. Leeds Shotokan would like to thank everyone who gave up their time to help set up, time keep, provide food and drink, referee, and coach at the event. Most importantly we would like to say a huge well done to all the competitors. Your performances, spirit, and camaraderie would have made Sensei Williams very proud.

We hope to see you all next year at York Elite!

KUGB Youth National Championships

July 1, 2018

Leeds Shotokan competitors capped off a busy month by attending the KUGB Youth National Championships this weekend in Chesterfield. The competition gave our more seasoned competitors the chance to showcase their skills and build upon impressive performances at the KUGB National Championships earlier on in the year. As ever the standard was very high across all the categories and every medal won was certainly hard earned.

Jade Stapleton-Smith managed to win his second National Title of the year with the type of assured performance we have come to expect from him.

James Humphries went one better than his Silver Medal at the KUGB National Championships by being crowned Youth National Champion for the 3 consecutive year.
